Secret culture
I love how Bubble Bobble hides secrets behind a curtain of perceived randomness: counters and triggers work silently to keep the game fresh and balanced - a secret sauce now a foundation of many modern roguelike games. Rogue Rogue tries it hard: even core contents must be discovered!
And, speaking of secrets in plain sight... In the gold age of the arcades, some arcade game bonuses were funny out-of-context thingies, little nods to the developer's passions and friends.
They truly were obscure relics of a different culture and tradition for me! That's why I did the same in Rogue Rogue... but I'm an Italian videogame nerd from the '80s, so you're going to collect over 140 quirks!
Next time I'd like to talk about one of my favorite kind of secrets in the game...
Rogue Rogue
A secrets-packed roguelite single-screen platformer arcade game.
